This painting was also inspired by reading about the Gullah woman of faith, Maum Celie of South Carolina who was featured in the March edition of The Breeze Magazine of the Lowcountry. For more information about this 8 x 10 painting on canvas, click here.

The Breeze Magazine of the Lowcountry featured my Gullah art in its April edition. The magazine cover used one of my paintings and four more were featured in the article which was called “The Gullah Art of R. S. Perry.” I was thrilled to have this attention from such a wonderful magazine!

These are both small 7″ x 5″ oil paintings. The first painting is a Rainbow Bunting, found in Mexico.

The second oil painting is a Golden Fronted Fruit Sucker found in places like Thailand and Cambodia. These are aviary birds, too, and can be seen in many zoos.

For the next month I plan to show some small paintings of Gullah people. These paintings were inspired by research my husband did for a magazine article on Maum Celie, a great Gullah friend of his uncle who lived in South Carolina. This Gullah woman is mending and listening to her radio. This is a small 6 x 6 inch painting on a substrate called Gessobord, which resembles masonite but with a coated surface that is quite receptive to paint! For more information on this painting, please click here.
